Coffee by 5 senses
We happened to stumble into this place after discovering Baker D. Chirico didn't serve any hot breakfasts. Apparently they also have an East Melbourne store, which would have been much nearer for me. Other than the fact it was pretty busy, it didn't look like somewhere that will rate well - it had the small kitchen syndrome. But I was delighted to read how much pride they take in their coffee, getting guest baristas in every month. It was in fact, pretty good, slightly more bitter than Genovese but still good.
Food was served surprisingly fast. I had some excellent poached eggs on toast ($7.50) add bacon, delicious roasted mushrooms and basil mayo which wasn't very different from mayo ($1-3 each).
The customers beside me, including the toddler crawling along the sofa seat, frequently disturbing me, were all eating the home-made baked beans, so I'm assuming they must be the signature dish. Oh well, my loss I guess. They also had Eggs on multigrain with avocado mash and smoked salmon ($13.90) which was unique and creamy-good.
