Julie and Jim Staddon's home becomes Braeside Café and a lounge for B&B guests from Thursday to Sunday, relegating them to the confines of the kitchen and bedroom. Guests are greeted at the door, and as Julie took our coats, she explained apologetically that we had to sit at one of the smaller tables because they give priority to people who book. When she realised we were the ones who booked, we got seated in the private dining room, overlooking the garden & chicken coop. At least you know the eggs are fresh…

The big breakfast had 2 perfectly poached eggs on home-made toast; a huge pile of sautéed mushrooms; tasty bacon; roasted tomato; and a fat Istrian sausage (that sausage lovers will crave for - we asked for spicy) served with Gyda's chutney ($15). Oh, and who can forget the hollandaise with colour so lurid you know it's made from eggs laid by hens free to peck around in the garden.

We also had a superb French toast with mixed berries. There's also Eggs Florentine ($10), and corn fritters with salmon, spinach, chutney and a poached egg ($12). Quality ingredients and great value, in a setting the city can't match.

When we left, Julie asked for comments and got her brother? (the taxi driver) to give us directions to Hepburn Springs. Excellent service right til the end. If you feel like a 1 hour road trip this place is a must visit.
