Rubia Coffee
Being a 24 hour café on Chapel St with all the clubs must give Chapellis some edge, because the food and coffees don't. Or at least the breakfast. The pastas and cakes look sinfully yummy.
Let's start with the service. The waiter had a weird mannerism. Didn't understand us half the time. He asked the guy next to us 'Are you sure you want to sit there?' and the guy interpreted it as the waiter was chasing him out. No he probably didn't mean to be rude (in fact he was just concerned that a tall guy sitting on a low seat would be uncomfortable) but it did seem that way.
On to the coffees. Who's heard of Rubia before??? Not only did it smell burnt and rancid, but it tasted turpeny, almost quite ashy. The hot chocolate was a better option.
The food was slightly better. The Big Breakfast ($18) had big portions, ok quality. Notice the hash has changed in recent years from
to
Also, they don’t allow any changes. We could choose scrambled eggs a few years ago…
The Mediterranean breakfast ($17) – scrambled eggs, semi-dried tomato, spring onion, pesto served on toasted olive bread lacked ingredients.
The eggs benedict ($12.50) wasn't as filling. Same quality though...
