Batch Espresso

Batch Espresso
320 Carlisle Street, Balaclava, VIC
Supreme coffee

The café's name is derived from the New Zealand word for 'holiday home', Bach. Batch's home away from home environment is cosy, casual, organic, friendly and sincere. The kiwi influence extends as far as the patriotic silver fern latte art, and the tips jar is even labelled 'TUPS'. The beverage list is made up of entirely New Zealand wines and beers, as well as Wellington based Supreme coffee, Phoenix juices, and the full 42-Below Vodka range. Eagle-eyed expats can also find NZ lollies such as K-Bars, chocolate fish and Perky Nanas lurking in the wine fridge.

By comparison, Las Chicas down the road is more mainstream, and together they make Carlisle St representative of Melbourne's famous café culture.

As New Zealand coffees are all pretty decent, this was no exception. But I still prefer Genovese. Coffee connoisseurs say this is more subtle than the Italian influence obvious through Genovese.

The menu boasts unique, slightly inspired combinations like Avocado and feta mash on toasted ciabatta ($11), Zucchini + goat’s cheese fritters with avocado, tomato and basil salad ($12.50) and Fried eggs with cumin, lemon and mint on toasted ciabatta with babaganoush ($12). There's the simple Coco Pops with milk ($5) or 2 free-range boiled eggs with toast soldiers ($6.50) too.

The menu changes but there are a few items that don't go off. Like the seriously hearty Potato + spinach hash with crunchy cornichons (gherkin-like things), a runny poached egg and optional chunks of juicy corned beef ($15). Cheap Eats described this dish is a stroke of brunch genius. A must-try if you're a fan of the spud.

We also tried the Chocolate + raspberry buttermilk pancakes with orange blossom ricotta and maple syrup ($12.50). The ricotta tasted like Lemon Pledge (the furniture polish for those non-domestics out there, and no I haven’t tasted it, the taste smelt like it). The pancakes were poor quality and the raspberries were the only saving grace. Pity for this dish – the place could have possibly been a 4!
