Grandma Funks
256 Swan St, Richmond, VIC
Own blend of coffee
It looks as if the owners have pinched their own grandmas' furniture - the bustling, funky, retro diner is decked out in shades of orange, green and red with a hot pink mirror ball. If you're lucky, you may just score one of the few couches. Even luckier if it's the one with the vintage Space Invaders arcade game as a coffee table!
There's something for everyone (even grandma) here. Open from morning until late, there's good coffee, prompt service and fantastic food at seriously down to earth prices. Not to mention the menu is so extensive you'll never be short on options plus there's also the daily specials board!
Interesting items on the lunch/dinner/supper menu include Focaccias like the V(Veal).B.L.T. and Grandma's monster meat lovers - beef, chicken, prosciutto, caramelised onion, cos lettuce, cheese, tomato and mayonnaise; Funk's couch potatoes baked with sautéed bacon, caramelised onion and melted cheese, served with sour cream or sweet chilli; crispy wood fired nachos served with Grandma's special salsa and house-made guacamole. There's the usual risottos and pastas like Spaghetti Bolognese too.
Breakfast is available from 8am to noon weekdays and until 4pm weekends. We had the Grandma's Zoobreaker ($7.40) - a toasty croissant sandwich with bacon, cheese, tomato and a fried egg with hollandaise, and added a hash brown and some mushrooms (only $1.40 each!). I won't really call it hollandaise but it was tasty. So was everything else inside, especially the mushrooms.
We also tried the Avocado, Cheese & Tomato Omelette ($9.90), with ham ($1.80) and caramelized onions ($1.40) as extra ingredients. Ingredients were fresh and portions huge.
The Savoury Eggs ($9.50) – Fresh tomato, caramelized onion & ham tossed through scrambled eggs & served on toast was similar too, just wish the toast was more fancy than the kind you get at home. When I went back the 2nd time and ordered the Grandma's Zoobreaker, add mushrooms, hash brown and avocado, I noticed some differences: the mushrooms weren’t inside the croissant this time and the croissant wasn’t pressed in a sandwich press so it looked much more presentable.
The food isn’t the best but it’s decent, at really good value.
