Liar, Liar

Liar, Liar
90 Kinkora Road, Hawthorn, VIC
Their own house blend

Liar, Liar shares the same parents as Apte but is newer, hence more modern. There's backlit wall panels, dark-stained wood tables and padded stepping stools as seats. Everyone is fascinated with the door handle as it is the filter/handle thingy ground coffee is placed in for an espresso machine. The coffee is just as popular with the customers, but I still didn't fancy it.

The hot chocolate is better than average, but still not good enough. Extra points for presentation though... As we entered, we noticed the waiter making 4 Purple Sunrises - a beetroot-ruddy mix that also contains ginger, celery, apple and carrot. Looks better than I imagine it tastes. There's other freshly squeezed juices on the menu though.

Breakfast is served until 3pm, and lunch starts at 11am. The menu of the latter includes a variety of quiches, pides and pizzas, and BLAT - bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato with aioli on sourdough ($10.50) - the guy opposite me on the communal table seemed to enjoy it even though the toast was paper thin.

For breakfast, there's not much choice. I ordered poached eggs on sourdough ($7.50) with sides of mushroom, bacon and hollandaise ($3 each). The eggs were perfect, the toast way too burnt and hard, the mushroom and bacon average only, the hollandaise excellent. There were other sides like smoked trout & a pea & feta fritter for $4.50 too.

He ordered the Liar, Liar scramble ($14) - supposedly it's specialty. It is a hearty mess of soft tofu, spinach, olives fetta and herbs served on 5 grain bread. It sure looked interesting. However, one bite and I lost my appetite. It was the most disgusting concoction ever. Made the rating go down from a 3 to a 2… and we expected a 4 like Apte… disappointing!

Wanted to say, i've been to Lair Lair twice already and have taken people with me that work in the industry. We loved it and were not disappointed. Coffee is great and the French Toast with the extra's is highly recommended

I think the Liar, Liar Scramble put me off... I'll be sure to try the French toast next time! Thanks for that.
